Yes, it is possible to upgrade the RAM of a Mac mini 2018. No it is not easy

It may be wishful thinking, but it surely looks like a memory location that can be upgraded.

The title of this article says it all. The RAM memory of the Mac mini is scalable. That said, it is a tedious and tedious process that is not for the sensitive souls.

First of all, the image that Apple has shown of the RAM in its ad is incredibly misleading. The RAM is hidden in what is almost a Faraday metal cage. To remove RAM keys, you must remove the cage.

The cage is screwed on the motherboard, and yes, you have to remove the motherboard.

I only used three bits Torx, a T10, a T6 and a T5. I've also used tweezers and a small plastic lever tool. All of these were available in my iFixit Pro Tech toolbox, but you can certainly get basic Torx bits everywhere.

At the time of the old mini Mac, it was not necessary to remove anything except the back of the cover to access the RAM. Now, the same level of major operation you had to perform before replacing a drive is what you need to do now to access RAM.

Be sure to watch the accompanying video, as it will guide you through all the steps, with close-up pictures of the parts you need to delete.

Before describing this process, I must warn you. Apple has not yet provided us with a definitive answer, but you probably cancel your warranty. You can also break the machine because everything is so tiny. That's what Apple means when it says that upgrading the RAM of this computer is not intended for consumers. This is not it. But it is feasible.

Warning: If you break your new computer, do not come crying for me. Neither me nor ZDNet, our parent company assumes no responsibility for your actions. You are alone.

Here is the process in a few words.

Remove the round plastic base: It does not bend anymore to remove it. You lift it. It's easy if you just pay attention.

Remove the round metal base: This has six small screws. Use your T6 bit and be careful. When you lift the base, you have to deal with a very short radio wire. Very, very carefully, remove both the screw from the mounting bracket of the radio and the connector from the radio.

Remove the fan: There are four screws, two on the side and two near the top. This is not difficult to remove, but the two located near the top are inside the body of the uniframe, so be careful. You will also need to remove a fan connector. It's tricky, so (here's a theme), be careful.

Remove the motherboard. There are two connectors near the back of the motherboard. One is ultra-small and the other is bigger. Carefully remove these two, then gently slide the motherboard in the direction of the ports. Take a deep breath.

Replace the RAM: This involves the removal of four screws around the RAM cage. This is new for Mac mini. Also remove the two rubber bumpers located on the side of the RAM. The cage and bumpers slide up and back. Then remove and replace your RAM … slowly.

OK, that's about it all. Now, reverse the process to put everything back in place. Again, watch the accompanying video for close-ups and the steps I took to upgrade my machine.

Good luck! Let us know in the comments if you have tried, or plan to try, to replace your RAM. Plus, if you're using the new 2018 Mac mini, tell us what you think.

Good luck and may the strength be with you.
