USA Today’s Nate Davis takes the road less traveled in his latest simulation project.
He has the Jets relaunching him with Sam Darnold and trading the No.2 pick, adding multiple playmakers in the process. In that expected trade, the Panthers rank No.2, with the Jets slipping to No.8 while also acquiring Carolina’s third-round pick and a 2022 first-round pick.
Davis got the Jets using their first pick on the Alabama wide Jaylen Waddle. Here is his explanation of the selection:
New York has finished last in all-out offense in each of the past two seasons and hasn’t had a 1,000-yard receiver since Brandon Marshall in 2015. So how about helping Darnold, pairing Waddle with WR Denzel Mims from second round of 2020 and reasonably give the young QB a chance to succeed with authentic weapons in the attack of new OC Mike LaFleur
Waddle is a versatile chess piece that can play three wide receiver positions. Waddle started his junior campaign with 28 receptions, 591 yards and four touchdowns. However, his season was cut short after suffering a broken ankle in the middle of the season against Tennesee.
While Waddle missed six games, he returned for the national championship game. He was clearly in pain, limping throughout the fight, but added three receptions for 34 yards.
For the Jets’ first-round second pick, Davis overtook them on skillful Alabama players by selecting RB Najee Harris.
Here is Davis’ reasoning behind the choice:
Did we mention getting some help for Darnold, who had by far New York City’s longest run (46 yards) of the 2020 season? Harris is a murderous runner, a reliable and protective capable wide receiver – all attributes that would allow the new regime to determine whether Darnold is the franchise savior the previous regime thought he was.
Obviously that choice depends on how Joe Douglas values the running back position going forward, but the Jets general manager can find it hard to hesitate over Harris’s mix of power and speed.
Harris is averaging 5.9 yards per carry, rushing for 1,224 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also added 27 receptions for 304 yards and seven receiving touchdowns.
