USADA is expected to increase drug testing combat night after Murtazaliev

LAS VEGAS – The US Antidoping Agency (USADA) recently decided that middleweight Khalid Murtazaliev had injected a steroid before a positive test on Oct. 3. But the anti-doping tsar of the UFC said that this did not prove that he had done it before a CB Dollaway fight.

"You have to have evidence, and I do not think anyone can definitively prove that he's ingested … before the fight," said vice president of the division's sports and performance division. UFC, Jeff Novitzky, at a press briefing Thursday in connection with the UFC 235 event on Saturday in Las Vegas.

Nevertheless, the promotion wants all fighters to be tested during a night of combat and hopes that new tests will eliminate many future problems.

"I really had these discussions with USADA," Novitzky said.

Last week, USADA condemned Murtazaliev to a suspension of two positive tests – the first on October 3 and the second on December 6 – for the steroid drostanolone and its metabolites. The first positive result came three weeks after a brutal TKO victory over Dollaway at UFC Fight Night 136.

Like many others on the map held in Moscow, Murtazaliev was not tested the night of combat. Although the USADA stated that the hunter's administration was "compatible with the administration by injection before the first sample collected", it did not propose a specific timetable and treated the two failures as a single rule violation.

Novitzky attributed the lack of testing to the need to monitor more than 550 fighters in 46 countries. He noted the tenacity of the USADA testers despite the task, noting who was following a hunter three miles from the mountain to get a sample.

"But again, we made it clear to them that our preference would be for everyone to be tested during a night of combat, and I think the growing number of tests we're doing now will solve this problem," did he declare.

Novitzky said the UFC had contacted Dollaway, but had not commented on the debate. The defeat has defeated a series of two victories for the finalist of "The Ultimate Fighter 7".

Despite the positivity of Murtazaliev, his victory over Dollaway at UFC Fight Night 136 will be maintained.
