UDOH is releasing new kinds of statistics regarding the state’s positive COVID-19 rates. Further details on these statistics can be found below:

Tendencies:
Note: UDOH now reports two measurements of percent positivity. A measure is determined by dividing the total of unique individuals who have tested positive by the unique number of people tested. We call this the “people over people” method. This method does not take into account people who have had repeated positive or negative tests in the past 90 days. This is the method we use to report a positive percentage since the start of the pandemic. This skews the higher percentage of positivity in the current testing environment.
We will also report the percentage of positivity based on the total number of positive tests divided by the total number of tests administered. We call this the ‘test-by-test’ method, this method is now used by at least 37 other states and provides a better comparison of what is happening across the country. This method takes into account who has repeated positive or negative test results and more accurately reflects our increase in testing. It skews the percentage of positivity lower in the current testing environment.
While the percentage of specific positivity will be different between the two methods, the general trends for each are very similar.
You can watch a discussion of these two methods here [youtube.com], or can find out more here [coronavirus.utah.gov].

The 7-day moving average of the percentage of positivity of “people to people” is 15.3%. The 7-day moving average of the percentage of “test-to-test” positivity is 7.0%.
