The original UK version of Utopia, Gillian Flynn’s conspiracy theory thriller, aired for two seasons. From Amazon adaptation / remake does not have the same luck.
After quite poor reception, Amazon announced that Utopia won’t get a second season. The news arrives via the Hollywood Reporter, noting that it’s the end of a journey for the series that began in 2014, with an HBO cover that didn’t work out. And a director’s gig for David Fincher, which didn’t work out either. This show has had a rough time.
The series, which starred John Cusack, Sasha Lane, Rainn Wilson and others, certainly didn’t come out at the right time. As a sci-fi story about a global conspiracy surrounding a horrific pandemic, it looked terribly on the nose in a way that probably wasn’t very appealing to many viewers. The show was Gillian Flynn’s debut as a showrunner, having written the series for the UK version.
As THR points out, Amazon has plenty of other sci-fi and fantasy irons on the go, including a final season of The Expanse and its next take on Lord of the Rings. Utopia, it seems, just doesn’t fit into this slate. There is always the British version.
