Valley man says he will get vaccinated after his wife dies from COVID-19

PHOENIX – A man from Valley has said he will get his COVID-19 vaccine and wants others to use his family story as testimony after his wife, 47, died earlier this month after contracting the virus.

Fernanda Vega de Tolleson died on July 13 in a hospital waiting room after a blood clot formed in her lungs, 10 days after testing positive for the virus.

Vega, her husband, Ysmael, and their four children chose not to receive the vaccine because they feared possible side effects.

Ysmael Vega said his wife’s death changed his mindset, especially as the Delta variant continues to make its mark in the United States.

“I’m going to get vaccinated. What I went through, I don’t want anyone else to experience it, ”said Ysmael Vega. KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Gaydos and Chad Thursday. “Everyone has their own choice, but COVID is real and what I’ve been through I don’t want to go back.”

Ysmael and two of his children have also tested positive for COVID-19 and he is still battling the disease as he mourns his late wife.

He described Fernanda as a “great grandmother, great mom and great wife”.

“Having this type of illness will make you change your mind,” Ysmael said. “I don’t want anyone to lose a loved one. It’s not a great feeling.

Dr Michael White, of Valleywise Health, said those hospitalized with the virus are “primarily those who have chosen not to be vaccinated for whatever reason.”

Valleywise doctors mainly treated people with moderate symptoms, but things changed two weeks ago, White said. Now patients are arriving seriously ill and unvaccinated.

At its main medical center in Phoenix, there are currently a dozen inpatients, and most of them are in intensive care.

“I have been fortunate enough to have her in my life and her memory will live on in all the hearts of her friends and family that she touched because she touched so many lives,” Ysmael said.

A total of 912,653 cases and 18,137 deaths from COVID-19 were reported in Arizona on Thursday.
