Last month, 21 cherry trees competing in the Nashville NFL draft were granted a reprieve. Nearly 1,800 others in California have not been so lucky.

Via the NBC Bay Area, vandals destroyed half of the 4,000 cherry trees on a farm owned by former NFL center Jeremy Newberry. On May 15, Newberry found that nearly 2,000 new trees had been torn off the roots and broken.

Here is the obvious question: who has time to extract 2,000 cherry trees from the roots and break them in half? Also: Who has the veiled desire to do it?

The trees, Newberry said to the San Francisco Chronicle, are worth $ 30,000. He plans to plant more trees and set up surveillance cameras.

Newberry, 43, spent two seasons in the NFL, including nine with the 49ers.
