A Texan mother of three children claims that her habit of vaping was at the root of a mysterious lung disease that left her in a coma.
Abilene's Sherie Canada turned to social media after a 24-day hospital stay to warn others that e-cigarettes had almost "killed" her.
"You do not know how precious [your lungs] until they are no longer yours and a machine tells them to breathe [sic] for you, "she wrote in a September 6 post on Facebook.
The mother of three has revealed that she started using electronic cigarettes three years ago after becoming addicted to flavors.
"You do not think about it. Everyone is doing it, "Canada told KWTX television.
But about two months ago, she started losing weight, breathing hard and developing a cough.
As her health continued to deteriorate, she went to the emergency room, where clots of fluid and blood were found in her lungs.
"I was so scared but more than anything [I was] so bad. I was already fighting for days and I was so tired! She wrote on Facebook.
She was placed in a coma for medical reasons on June 18, six days after admission to the hospital.
"When I woke up and one of the doctors told me how bad the vaping was," wrote Canada on Facebook.
Although she recovered, she said that she felt "shameful" because of the preventable medical episode.
"I was sent to the ICU on the 13th birthday of my intermediate son and intubated on the birthday of my 15 year old son," Canada told KWTX. "I felt a lot of guilt and shame. I did this to myself.
Canada stated that it is now using this experience to inform others of the dangers of vaping.
"I asked everyone for forgiveness for having that pain endured as well and [I am] I'm just happy to be here today to share my story and my testimony, "she wrote on Facebook.
At least six people in the country have died in the country as a result of a vet illness and more than 450 people have been hospitalized.
