Vaping sign in a mall causes controversy

FLATWOODS, Ky. (WSAZ) – Vaping is the latest teenage trend.

But with the trend come the warnings. Several health organizations, including the CDC, the FDA and the Surgeon General's Office, have issued warnings about the effects of vaping on health.

The Surgeon General's office says that some of the flavors in e-cigarettes can lead to serious lung disease and that nicotine can also harm the growth of children's brains and lead to addiction to other drugs.

But Carl Wellman, owner of That Vape Shop, says the vaping saved his life.

"I do not think anyone liked to smoke more than me," he said.

After regularly smoking two packs of cigarettes a day, he started taking steam and that's when he found a decrease in his smoking habits.

"Before I knew it, I dropped the cigarettes for three and a half days and I did not realize it," Wellman said.

That's why he has a sign outside his stores that says "Steam saves lives". According to the Royal College of Physicians of England, vaping is 95% less harmful than cigarettes, which Wellman hopes long-time smokers listen to.

"If something will save your life, you may want to give it a chance," he said.

But not everyone agrees with the sign. Kara Ross, a mother of two, says children could be negatively influenced by the message.

"Now they are reporting something that is even more harmful, and it still contains addictive nicotine," she said.

But Wellman says he's witnessed vaping that improves people's lives.

"When an older person comes in and says" thank you so much for getting rid of those cigarettes, "it's worth it, he says.
