VAT does not provide for new plants

The Tennessee Valley Authority Board of Directors has approved a 20-year plan that does not include any major new facilities.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that the plan approved last week plans to draw more power from existing nuclear, gas and hydroelectric power plants. It also includes more solar energy, backed by improved energy storage and other new technologies.

TVA will also continue to explore the possibility of building small modular nuclear reactors.

Environmental groups are disappointed with the plan. Amanda Garcia, of the Southern Environmental Law Center, said she was not doing enough to encourage solar efficiency and rooftop efficiency.

She says: "TVA is missing a huge opportunity to chart a different path."

TVA is the country's largest utility, providing electricity to more than 10 million people in parts of seven southern states.
