BURLINGTON, Vermont (WCAX) – Vermont health officials say the daily number of COVID-19 cases hit a record high on Wednesday.

The daily number of cases has increased to 178 and one new death has been reported. The previous one-day count of 152 was reported on November 18.

Higher counts could be related to reporting changes. As of Wednesday, the department also included probable cases in the daily count. A case is considered “probable” if the person tests positive for an antigen test and shows symptoms of COVID-19, or if the person has symptoms and is linked to a confirmed case of COVID-19. Prior to Wednesday, reported cases included only those confirmed by a PCR test.

Chittenden County led the state with 64 new cases. Washington County has recorded 29 new cases. Orleans, Franklin and Addison counties have recorded cases in adolescents.

There are 29 people currently hospitalized with three of these cases in the ICU.

The state’s average seven-day test positivity rate is now 2.3%.
