[VIDEO] American Idol Recap: Katy Perry Twin – Watch Top Auditions

[ad_1]

American IdolThe second round of Season 19 auditions no longer featured children of disgraced political figures, but did introduce us to a girl who looks a bit like Katy Perry. And it’s not nothing.

The lookalike in question was 17-year-old Hannah Everhart, who charmed the judges with a beautiful (albeit somewhat reserved) rendition of Johnny Cash’s “Wayfaring Stranger”. She had an interesting tone in her voice, but the judges needed to hear more.

They were a little more impressed with his work on Etta James’ “Finally”, but the amount of coaching and encouragement it took makes me wonder how Everhart will fare when the competition gets tougher.

Watch her audition below, then read on for a list of 10 other memorable singers making their way to Hollywood:

AMANDA MENA, 18 YEARS OLD | This week’s first Golden Ticket went to Mena, an undeniable star who opened the episode with a deadly rendition of The Beatles’ “Golden Slumbers”. In addition to earning that coveted sheet of paper, Mena was also dubbed ‘one of a kind’ by a very impressed Perry.

AMMON OLAYAN, 17, and LIAHONA OLAYAN, 16 | This magical and musical brother-sister duo – the oldest of eight children! – discovered their songwriting skills while living in tents and raising goats. And in front of three soft-jawed judges, they demonstrated those talents with one of the best original songs I’ve heard on Idol for a long time (maybe never?), a jam ready for the radio which earned them unanimous yeses in all areas. The only catch, which I now predict will result in a dramatic cutoff during Hollywood week, is older brother Ammon has to work on his delivery.

ANTHONY GUZMAN, 27 YEARS OLD | No one, let alone the judges, would have guessed that this “modern Viking” was packing a pipe set worthy of an old-school crooner – especially since it was presented via an over-the-top Avengers parody. Don’t judge a book by the hammer, Perry thought before giving him one of his two yeses. (Although Guzman helped Bryan return to his Scandinavian roots, that was a no on his part.)

CALVIN UPSHAW, 26 YEARS OLD | The judges were really sensing this audition, a moving performance of “Falling Out” by Calvin Richardson. It was a little difficult to tell if the judges were fully convinced of the song, or if they were just overwhelmed by its heartbreaking story, but they sent it back and forth.

CASEY BISHOP, 15 years old | This aspiring star was full of wonderful surprises, from her taste for music (Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sublime, etc.) to her powerful voice. The judges enjoyed his coverage of Motley Crue, but they love her follow-up performance, a rendition of Ella Fitzgerald’s “My Funny Valentine” that was so good she literally made Perry laugh with pleasure.

YURISBEL, 25 YEARS OLD | The judges have made questionable decisions this season, but sending this ‘Cuban cookie monster’ to Hollywood could overtake them all (so far). Sure, he had a lot of energy, but the bar mitzvah dancers hype too. Where are their gold banknotes ?! Either way, catching up with this guy at Hollywood Week should be… interesting.

CHAYCE BECKHAM, 24 years old | Another clear Top 10 favorite, this charming and insecure idol has the kind of gritty voice that just gets you pregnant. And “What Brings Life also Kills” by Kolton Moore & The Clever Few was the perfect vehicle to show it. Beckham better say goodbye to Apple Valley (there aren’t even any apples!) Because he has a long future in this competition.

CASSANDRA COLEMAN, 24 YEARS OLD | What about this musical angel, who blew the judges away with a powerful performance of “The Way It Was” by The Killers? I kept trying to place his sound, but Bryan said it better: “You are a new voice the world has never heard.”

WILLIE SPENCE, 21 YEARS OLD | Since La’Porsha’s time we haven’t had a cover of “Diamonds” of this magnitude, but as she used the song to show off her lower register, Spence was shining with her booming high notes. – the perfect hat for what looked like a very long night of auditions.

* While this recap focuses only on those contestants who made it to Hollywood, can we take a minute to talk about Ace Stiles, the ‘quirky vintage’ voice boy who shared his story of becoming transgender at 14? I’m not saying I don’t agree with the judges’ ruling that Ace needs a little more confidence and life experience to develop as an artist, but the whole segment felt a little … is the exploitation too extreme in a nutshell?
