Friday evening, after being stopped by Lyoto Machida at the main event of Bellator 222, Chael Sonnen decided to get up to hang up the gloves.

Sonnen had a legendary career as a professional mixed martial artist, repeatedly challenging the WEC and UFC titles, and nearly defeating the Bellator heavyweight strap. In the end, however, he has never captured a major MMA title.

This reality must hurt Sonnen, who did not hide that he had promised his late father to become MMA World Champion.

At the Bellator 222 post-match press conference, Chael Sonnen was asked about what he would say to his father at the end of his career in the MMA position. He immediately tore up and provided a poignant answer.

"I would tell him I tried," he says, his voice shaking.

Although Chael Sonnen has never won a title at Bellator, WEC or the UFC, he has accomplished remarkable things in his MMA career, defeating leading opponents like Quinton's "Rampage" Jackson , Wanderlei Silva, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Michael. Bisping, Nate Marquardt, Brian Stann, Yushin Okami, Renato "Babalu" Sobral and Jason "Mayhem" Miller. He is also the only man to have fought the MMA legends, Anderson Silva, Jon Jones and Fedor Emelianenko.

Suffice it to say that his late father would probably be incredibly proud of his accomplishments.
