Video on the collapse of the Arecibo telescope | HYPEBEAST

The sad news of the collapse of the Arecibo telescope is still being felt by many astronomers around the world. To give a glimpse of how the entire 820-ton receiver collapsed, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has just released official images of the disaster.

The video (with sound) gives two angles: one from the base of the support tower and the other via a drone which happened to be focused on the critical anchor bolt which gave way to the increased tension . We can see that the top three sections of the support towers broke off and at what angle the 305-meter telescope fell into the canopy below.

With the amount of destruction and the violent force exerted, the slamming of the cables and the shearing of the columns, it is just a miracle that no one was hurt. Watch the video above to witness the Arecibo telescope collapse that happened in Puerto Rico just days ago.
