A giant meteor was spotted shooting into the night sky over New Jersey on Sunday evening, according to video from the event and a nonprofit group following the phenomenon.

The meteor howled in the sky over Lakewood around 7:15 p.m., according to images released by the Lakewood Scoop.

The meteor was likely part of a “fireball event” this weekend, where meteors flooded the skies over Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, according to the nonprofit American Meteor Society .

The group, which tracks the meteor showers, has received some 280 notifications about the event, they wrote on their website.

Thousands of fireball events, like the one captured at Lakewood, occur in Earth’s atmosphere every day, but most are not seen by humans because they occur over oceans or during the day, when not visible, depending on the group.
