GRUNDY, Va. (AP) – Democrat Terry McAuliffe and Republican Glenn Youngkin are set to face off in the first Virginia governors’ debate of general election season, in a race that is being closely watched as a possible indicator of voter sentiment before 2022 national midterm elections.
The two candidates are due to meet Thursday night at the Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, a small, conservative town in southwest Virginia. This is the first of two gubernatorial debates to be held before the November 2 elections. The second debate is scheduled for September 28 at a liberal-leaning northern Virginia community college.
Thursday’s hour-long debate will be moderated by Susan Page, Washington bureau chief of USA Today. Page will be joined by panelists Bob Holsworth, a well-known political analyst from Virginia, and Candace Burns, CBS 6 News presenter in Richmond.
McAuliffe was governor of Virginia from 2014 to 2018. Youngkin, the former co-CEO of The Carlyle Group, a private equity firm, is a political newcomer. In Virginia, governors are not allowed to serve in consecutive terms.
The first debate will take place the day before the early in-person voting begins at local voter registration desks. Due to COVID-19 precautions, a limited number of tickets will be distributed to law school members and local communities. The event will be broadcast on multiple networks and will be broadcast live on the law school’s YouTube channel.
