A public school neighborhood in Virginia rejected the implementation of state policies that address the treatment of transgender and non-binary students.

“The school board received comments from many citizens this evening and we had the opportunity to discuss among ourselves. We have determined that we will not take any action on the proposed transgender policies at this time. Which means that they are not in force. Chesapeake School Board President Victoria Proffitt said: WAVY reported.

Guidance from the Virginia Department of Education allows non-binary and transgender students to use the bathroom and play on sports teams that match their chosen identity, not their birth sex. The policies, however, were never voted on by the school board, as only one board member offered to review them.

Numerous speakers to the board of directors on Monday night criticized state guidelines as stripping parents of control over their children, WAVY reported.

“When my children are at school, they are students and not school children. My parental authority does not stop at the parking lot,” a mother opposed to politics told the council.

The move comes after the Newport News school board also refused to implement state policies, despite the board calling a special meeting to reconsider the vote.

Supporting board member Dr Patricia King lamented that she thinks the school board has let down on transgender and non-binary students.

“Transgender people are not pedophiles, they are not sexual predators, they are just people who want to live their lives the way they want to live it and they have every right to do so,” King said after the vote. “I do not think so [transgender students] should be scared because we will protect all of our kids but i think the school board let them down. “

The General Assembly passed a state law last year that requires schools to pass the policies by the 2021-2022 school year at the latest.

Govt. Democratic Ralph northam Guidance said last year that, “we fully expect our schools to treat transgender students – like all students – with the dignity and respect they deserve. “
