INDIANAPOLIS (Inside INdiana Business) – Eighteen local historical societies across the state will receive grants from the Indiana Historical Society. The IHS has awarded more than $ 500,000 from its Heritage Support Grant program to organizations in 15 counties in Indiana.
The initiative is supported by a grant from Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment, the current iteration of which is expected to award $ 2.5 million to local historic organizations through 2024. The grants are used to meet the needs of management of collections, diversity, equity, access and inclusion, and sustainability and planning.
Recipients include:
Bartholomew County Historical Society – The Bartholomew County Historical Society received $ 45,000 to support the restoration of the Henry Cattle Farm, built in 1871 and considered the last 19th century farm in the county.
Daviess County Historical Society – The Daviess County Historical Society received $ 31,500 to fund the renovation of the museum’s ground floor which will serve as the museum’s collections and programming space.
Freeman Army Airfield Museum, Inc., – The Freeman Army Airfield Museum received $ 3,500 for a historic monument commemorating the 1945 civil rights protests by Tuskegee Airmen at the Freeman Army Airfield.
Friends of Knox County Public Library – Friends of the Knox County Public Library received $ 26,000 to digitize the first Knox County records.
Friends of the National New York Central RR Museum – The Friends of the National New York Central Railroad Museum received $ 20,140 to build and install a theater train for use in the new children’s area.
Ogden Dunes Historical Society – The Ogden Dunes Historical Society received $ 5,000 to fund a report on historic structures. The report will identify the condition and infrastructure needs of the 1932 Hour Glass chalet and assess the building’s ability to implement accessible features.
Howard County Historical Society – The Howard County Historical Society received $ 5,000 to help restore the 1887 Seiberling Mansion’s porte-cochere.
Indiana Jewish Historical Society – The Indiana Jewish Historical Society received $ 25,000 to fund the Indiana Jewish Preservation Corps pilot program.
Indianapolis Black Firefighters Association – The Indianapolis Black Firefighters Association received $ 48,000 to help renovate a 1952 Auxiliary Fire Hall to establish the Indianapolis Black Firefighters Museum.
International Circus Hall of Fame – The International Circus Hall of Fame received $ 50,000 to finance the renovation of the 1922 American Circus Company office building, which will be used for costume storage and archives.
Jackson County History Center – The Jackson County History Center received $ 37,500 to repair the walls, siding and ceiling of their 1871 barn.
Jay County Historical Society, Inc. – The Jay County Historical Society received $ 33,900 to replace the electrical system at the Jay County Historical Museum.
LaPorte County Steam Historical Society – The LaPorte County Historical Steam Society received $ 20,000 to renovate an existing machine shop to provide an interpretive space focused on the evolution of the locomotive and steam equipment.
Milan 54, Inc. – Milan 54 received $ 50,000 to install a fire extinguisher system in the Milan ’54 Hoosiers museum. The fire extinguishing system will allow the organization to maintain a safe environment and protect the museum collection from damage.
Randolph County Historical Society, Inc. – The Randolph County Historical Society received $ 10,000 to purchase a microfilm reader to expand public access to RCHS documents and to fund a collections assessment study.
Rome Community Center, Inc. – The Rome Community Center received $ 50,000 to repair the roof of the Rome courthouse in 1818.
Russiaville Historical Society – The Russiaville Historical Society received $ 50,000 to renovate the interior of its 1912 intercity building for use as a museum and meeting place for the RHS. The renovation will allow the RHS to preserve its collection, to interpret the interurban built space and to promote the history of the city of Russiaville.
Workers’ Institute – The Working Men’s Institute received $ 15,000 to fund a temporary position of Collections Manager. The Collections Manager will maintain WMI records, develop and organize museum exhibits, and support research activities.
