Viruses linked to paralyze polio-like disease in children, say researchers

MINNEAPOLIS – Researchers at the University of Minnesota and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warn that a virus appears to be at the root of a polio-like disease, called acute flaccid myelitis, which has caused paralyzing symptoms in some children remains hospitalized after losing any motor function.

the the researchers say they found the enterovirus D68 in the cerebrospinal fluid of one of six children with acute flaccid myelitis, a mysterious and sometimes deadly paralyzing disease. Minnesota had 10 of the 228 confirmed MFA cases in 2018.

Dr. Heidi Moline, a senior researcher at the university, says that the fact that they were able to identify the EV-D68 virus as a cause of paralysis in one of Minnesota's patients suggests that 39; she is probably behind other recent AFM cases.

Last month, the CDC reported a peak has been observed in enterovirus D68 and acute flaccid myelitis.

Of the 2,579 patients tested, 358 were Enterovirus-D68 positive by 2018. In the same year, 223 cases of acute flaccid myelitis were confirmed, according to the CDC.

The virus tends to show up every two years in late summer and early fall, NBC News reported, citing the CDC.

The research comes from a research network tracking cases in seven medical centers: Cincinnati; Houston; Kansas City, Mo .; Nashville; Pittsburgh; Rochester, New York; and Seattle.
