Volusia reports nearly 500 new cases of COVID on Friday

The Florida Department of Health announced an additional 16,875 coronavirus cases on Friday, including nearly 500 in Volusia County, bringing the state’s total to 1,548,067.

On New Years Eve, the state reported its largest single-day increase in cases with 21,015. The second-highest increase occurred on January 7 with 19,816 cases. The third highest increase was 19,530 cases on January 8.

The largest one-day increase in new cases in Volusia County occurred on January 3 with 588 cases. The second highest increase was on January 5 with 562 cases. Friday’s 493 new cases make it the third highest single-day increase in the county.

Flagler County reported a record number of new daily cases on Jan. 2 with 115. The county saw its second-highest increase on Jan. 3 with 97.

Florida reported 186 new coronavirus deaths on Friday, bringing the total to 23,799 statewide.

An additional 370 deaths of non-residents are not included in the state’s total number.

As of Thursday, 74,549 people statewide received a COVID-19 vaccine, bringing the total number of vaccines given to 849,317, according to a report by FDOH. Of these vaccines administered, 79,552 people received the second dose.

The state’s daily positivity rate, calculated using the total number of people tested for the virus and the total number of people who tested positive, was 10.14% on Friday, based on 163,164 tests.

As of Friday, 67,463 Florida residents were hospitalized with COVID-19.
