– All Wake County government employees must be fully immunized against COVID-19 by September 15 or be tested weekly.

Wake County Director David Ellis announced the policy following the spread of the Delta variant and causing an increase in the number of cases, largely among the unvaccinated, on Wednesday.

“I wouldn’t encourage our employees to get vaccinated if I didn’t think it was the right thing to do,” Ellis said. “We have led efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19 since it first appeared in our community, and this is the next step we must take to protect our 4,200 employees and the people they serve every day. “

Wake employees who are already fully vaccinated or who will eventually become vaccinated before September 15 will receive $ 250 and two bonus days off. Employees must receive either a single dose of Johnson & Johnson vaccine or both doses of Moderna or Pfizer vaccine to receive incentives. Employees who choose not to be vaccinated must get tested for COVID-19 every week, starting September 20.

As of Wednesday, more than 76% of adults in Wake County received at least one dose of the vaccine.
