Ironically, I weighed the least (165 pounds) when I worked at McDonalds as the high level of activity allowed me to eat whatever I wanted and lose weight. However, once I got my full-time job out of college, my lifestyle quickly became much more sedentary and I ordered take-out almost every day.

I hit rock bottom at my heaviest. I would avoid the scale because it was a constant reminder of the long and painful process to get to where I was. The highest figure I weighed was 280 pounds. I continued with my messy eating habits even after that awareness and easily reached almost 300 pounds. My highest recorded BMI was 40, which is considered morbidly obese.

Christmas 2019 was a turning point for me. After several work events in November and December, with many photos taken that were uploaded, I ended up getting disgusted. I started to wonder how I ended up where I am and why I didn’t stop at each of the millions of chances I had. I knew I needed a change to regain my confidence and be happy again.

I had no desire to go to a gym and work out, which meant I ended up scouring the internet for endless pyramid schemes, fake news, and influencers trying to sell. weight loss products. It was at this point that I discovered that weight is simply regulated by the calories in and out. I bought a food scale and started to weigh all of my food and track my calories. I didn’t cut out any of the foods that I liked, I just started to factor that into my daily limits. Before I knew it the weight started to melt away and I was feeling more energized and motivated than ever!

This led me to join the gym and start going there a few days a week for about two months, until the pandemic hit and the gyms were forced to close. Around this time, I started to use walking as my main exercise. I started aiming for 5,000 steps per day, then 10,000 and eventually settled into around 20,000 steps per day to speed up progress. At around 240 pounds, I managed to take 40,000 steps in a day! I ended up getting an iFit treadmill from Walmart for around $ 200 so I could step inside on cold, rainy days. I’m a big data enthusiast, so the app has helped me immensely in seeing my run stats and taking classes on my phone or tablet. I learned that with 20,000 steps per day, I burned over 1000 calories per day, which really helped jumpstart my entire fitness journey!

In my opinion, walking ends up being the absolute best workout for beginners and intermediates. There is almost no recovery time and can be done in all conditions. Even with the gyms open now, my exercise of choice will still be walking. Now that gyms and fitness centers near me are closing again due to COVID, I’m back on the treadmill several times a week, sometimes even several times a day to burn those calories so I can insert food that I like.

I’m officially down 81 pounds and now weigh 199 pounds. I lost the majority of it – around 60 pounds – in August of this year, and then slowed down from there. I now eat more as I move towards building muscle.

My friends and family were completely blown away by my transformation. In the first month or two, people told me it wouldn’t last and that I would probably give up in a week or two. By month 3 the same people let me know how much better I was starting to get and that even my posture improved when I sat or walked. Now, almost 12 months into the journey, everyone is completely in shock at what’s possible when you focus on something and stick to it. The most common thing I hear is “you are half your size!”

The biggest positive side effect of my weight loss is confidence. I’ve never been the most confident type of person, and the more I start to like the person I become, the more confidence I gain. The things people say about me don’t matter anymore and the only opinion I let affect me now is my own. Another side effect inspired others to take their own journey and succeed. I was the laziest a human being could be, and my closest friends realize that if I can make a change, anyone can do anything.

After struggling to find the most basic information on how to lose weight, my biggest goal is to make things as easy as possible for others. I created a Facebook group, “ Lose Weight, Eat Pizza, ” which is about learning how to develop a better relationship with food, providing free information on calories and the basics of weight loss. without trying to sell anything to anyone.

The best advice I can give to anyone is to keep it simple. Stick to the basics if you want to lose weight. Don’t go looking for magic teas, pills, or body wraps, just eat fewer calories than you burn and you’ll lose weight. It’s that simple.
