Broecker died Monday in New York, said Kevin Krajick, science editor of the Earth Institute of Columbia University.
Broecker has spent many years as a professor at Columbia and his extensive work focuses on the relationship between oceans, climate and geological time.

Broecker and his work are also behind other well-known climate concepts, such as the "Global Ocean Conveyor Belt", which links deep ocean movements with changes in the atmosphere.
Broecker appeared on CNN Newsroom in 2009 to talk about the warning signs of climate change revealed by his research.
