Walmart (WMT), the nation’s largest private employer, is raising the wages of 565,000 of its nearly 1.2 million in-store associates, marking the retailer’s third salary increase for hourly associates in the last year.

“As of September 25, associates in the Frontend, Food & Consumable and General Merchandise working groups will receive an increase of at least $ 1 per hour. This means an increase for over 565,000 store associates. This is our third salary investment in in-store associates in the past year, ”wrote US CEO John Furner in a letter obtained by Yahoo Finance.

With the latest pay rise, the average hourly wage for associates at Walmart stores in the United States is $ 16.40, according to Furner.

In March, 425,000 store associates in the digital and storage workgroups saw an increase ranging from $ 13 to $ 19 an hour, depending on location and market. Last September, Walmart increased the wages of 165,000 hourly associates in its supercenters. At the time, the retailer said his new roles as “team leader” would see a pay range of between $ 18 and $ 21 an hour with the option of going up to $ 30 an hour. Walmart also increased its hourly wage for associates in the deli and bakery fields to $ 15 or more and said its hourly workers at auto service centers would also see a pay rise.
