The idea is that you can place an order on the Walmart app and that a delivery person – who has been working for the company for at least a year – brings the items to your home and makes the rest.
The exact details of the security system that will be used have not yet been announced, but Walmart has announced that it would use "smart entry technology and a portable proprietary camera" to access the homes of customers. The system is going[allow] customers to control access in their homes and [give] allowing them to monitor remote deliveries, "so even the most security conscious can keep an eye on their belongings.
Having someone to bring food to your house is one thing, but let them store your fridge? And if they put the milk on the wrong shelf? There is something odd intimate about letting a stranger organize your food.
This program is Walmart's response to Amazon, which launched its Key service last year. Amazon Key avoids packet thieves by allowing delivery people to directly access your home. Amazon can deliver to your garage or inside your door if you have a garage or a compatible smart lock (from 200 USD).
Walmart's goal is to dominate Amazon's delivery with its next-day free delivery service, launched earlier this year on select items. She hoped to free up time for her employees (and avoid some of Amazon's criticisms of her work practices) by using robots in her stores and offering stand-alone grocery deliveries.
The company is also preparing its own version of Amazon Go, the smart grocery store. The New York Intelligent Retail Lab uses cameras to identify low inventory items and automatically purchase new inventory, rather than identifying items to buy such as Amazon stores.
According to Walmart, InHome will be available in the fall for more than a million customers in Kansas City, Pittsburgh and Vero Beach, Florida. Later this year, the service will also be extended to returns, which simply requires leaving the items you want to return to the counter of your kitchen.
