In Avengers: Endgame, Wanda Maximoff still spoke with an Eastern European accent, but in WandaVision, her accent is gone. What happened?
Throughout her time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff, has maintained her Eastern European accent. On recent releases, however, it seemed to decrease significantly. And now, in the new Disney + series, WandaVision, we don’t hear it at all, although in the first episode, Vision attributes Wanda’s odd behavior to her Sokovian origins. Is it simply the product of Wanda trapped in American sitcoms in a suburban American city or is there something more?
Wanda always had her accent Captain America: Civil War, but a few years later in Avengers: Infinity War, his accent was drastically reduced. At the time, Infinity war Directors Joe and Anthony Russo explained why Wanda’s accent could only be heard mildly.

Since she’s on the run in the movie, it certainly makes sense for her to try and lose her accent. By the way, Black Widow, also from Eastern Europe, speaks with an American accent and, at the beginning of Civil war, she gives advice to Wanda on how to blend in. So, given Black Widow’s history of espionage, it is no exaggeration to believe that she may have trained Wanda to lose her accent. And given that Wanda spent a few years in hiding to train, there’s a good chance she’s permanently adapted to speaking differently.
However, in WandaVision, his accent has completely disappeared. Since Wanda lives in a world based on old-school American sitcoms, it would make sense for her to speak like these characters. In fact, she might consciously adopt an American accent in an attempt to blend in with the suburban setting, just as she and Vision actively hide their unusual abilities.
Wanda could also create the world of the series based on her knowledge of American sitcoms. Growing up in Sokovia, it’s possible that she had access to sitcoms as a child and thus built her ideal image of life with Vision around it. Within that setting, she may have made the decision to shed her accent using her reality-warping abilities so that she can live the perfect suburban sitcom life she envisions.
Like the episodes of WandaVision progress, we could learn more about how Wanda’s sitcom world works and get a better idea of what happened to her focus. For now, however, it looks like she learned to remove most of it when she was on the run and has now learned to use an American accent to blend in with the rest of the suburban characters on the show.
