A university in Washington created separate housing specifically for black students.
Western Washington University has designated the fourth floor of Alma Clark Glass Hall as reserved accommodation for its “Black Affinity Housing Program,” becoming the latest school to adopt such a program.
“The program will explore and celebrate the diversity of Black and African American peoples and culture, in a historical and contemporary context,” the program’s website says, also stating that all “Western students residing in the program help foster a warm and dynamic community supporting people, personal and academic success. “

“The residents of Black Affinity Housing, representing all diverse identities, pride themselves on fostering a sense of belonging for all residents by creating a safe environment for open, honest and at times stimulating dialogue,” the website keep on going.
The university hosted a online seminar in april the matter, claiming that the separate living space gives students “the opportunity to live in a shared space … with others who have a shared identity, in particular a marginalized identity”.
Additionally, the university said black student organizations and black school applicants have called for the housing program and championed the move as “not innovating on anything new.”
The controversial program segregation race-based student housing has been adopted at other colleges including the University of Colorado at Boulder, Stanford University, and Cornell University.
