NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility is expected to launch a rocket that will be visible around DC as it soars into the sky on Tuesday.
The facility expects to launch the 16th Northrop Grumman refueling mission to the International Space Station at 5:56 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The freighter Cygnus is the SS Ellison Onizuka, named after the first Asian American selected as an astronaut.
NASA will perform the launch live from 5:30 p.m.
Depending on where you are in the DC area, you might be able to watch the rocket go up with your own eyes. The visibility map covers quite a bit of territory.
NASA to Post Launch Updates on the Wallops Flight Facility Twitter feed and his Facebook page.
The weather forecast is currently 80% for launch and see the rocket rise into the sky.
Try to find an open area with no trees or buildings for the best chance of watching the launch. Once you’ve spotted it, try peeking through binoculars for a closer view.
By the way, after sunset, look west to see the beautiful clustering of the young crescent moon and Venus. Bright Jupiter – with darker Saturn to the right – will be visible in the southeast when it gets dark.
The Perseid meteor shower peaks this week on the night of August 11 and possibly the night of August 12. Don’t miss what should be a great heavenly spectacle. Going to a dark place with a clear view of the sky works best.
