Former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton returned to Jordan-Hare Stadium to watch the Tigers take on No.2 Georgia on Saturday (gametracker), and he found an unlikely mate in the stands. Auburn’s basketball coach Bruce Pearl sat shirtless with his team in the student section, inspiring Newton – who wore one of his iconic feathered hats – to leave the field and join him for a photoshoot before the game.

Earlier on Saturday, Newton posted an Instagram story that asked fans if he should watch the game from the students section, and more than 90% voted yes. Newton then gave fans exactly what they wanted and – thanks to Pearl, 61’s bare chest – then some. Madi Prewett, an Auburn alumnus and former contestant of “The Bachelor,” joined Newton and Pearl in what has become an energetic celebration.

Auburn fans applauded Newton as soon as he stepped onto the pitch, and for good reason. The 2010 Heisman Trophy winner led the team to a perfect record and a national championship in its only season on the Plains.

Newton, a former MVP and Super Bowl quarterback with the Carolina Panthers, is currently an NFL free agent. The New England Patriots knocked out the 32-year-old on Aug. 31 to pave the way for rookie Mac Jones.

Pearl, who became Auburn’s coach in 2014-15, led a complete turnaround in the program. The Tigers have already made two appearances in the NCAA tournament with Pearl at the helm – including a trip to the 2019 Final Four – after making just one in 14 years before her arrival.
