Governor Kate Brown holds a press conference at 11 a.m. on Friday to discuss Oregon’s ongoing response to COVID-19. She will be joined by representatives of the Oregon Health Authority.

Officials are expected to share the state’s latest coronavirus modeling, which will include projected hospitalizations, and also discuss the state’s vaccination plans.

This press conference comes after Brown announced on Tuesday that 25 of the state’s 36 counties are at “extreme risk” of coronavirus transmission and face the toughest new restrictions on business and social gatherings for at least two weeks.

Brown’s list named five more counties than was originally described last week when the governor unveiled a four-tier structure for implementing the restrictions. Counties are categorized into different categories based on case rates and positivity testing, with restrictions increasing based on level of risk.

Virtually all of the state’s most populous counties, including Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, Marion, Lane, and Jackson, are in the “extreme risk” category.

The restrictions are aimed at slowing hospitalizations, which rose sharply in November. The number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 was 559 as of Thursday, including 109 in intensive care.
