Representative Raul Ruiz, MD, shared two images of the coffin leaving St. Francis of Assisi Church on Saturday morning. The Marines carried the casket to the waiting procession. The family of Marine Corporal Hunter Lopez followed closely behind.

Our entire nation is eternally indebted to Corporal Hunter Lopez of the United States Marine Corps for his incredible service to our nation. Today my heart is with the Lopez family, the Gold Star families of our country and all of our brave service members and veterans.

It will be the latest in a series of Coachella Valley events honoring the hero who died before Corporal Lopez was laid to rest later today at Riverside National Cemetery.

To accommodate the large number of participants expected, the memorial service will feature large screens so that the public can attend the ceremony.

A public viewing took place on Friday at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in La Quinta, where people gathered to pay their respects to Corporal Lopez.

The 22-year-old Indio native was among 13 U.S. servicemen killed in a terrorist attack outside Kabul airport in Afghanistan on August 26.

Another procession took place on Friday, which took Corporal Lopez past the three unified Desert Sands schools he attended before becoming Marine: Amelia Earhart Elementary School, John Glenn Middle School and La Quinta High School.

It was part of a series of events to honor Corporal Lopez’s ultimate sacrifice that kicked off Thursday with a procession from Forest Lawn Funeral Home to Cathedral City.

It passed the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Post and ended at St. Francis of Assisi Church in La Quinta.

Supporters lined the streets to honor the hero’s life, some waving American flags and others holding homemade signs.
