Stephen Curry has one of the most famous names in the sport, but technically that’s not really what shows up on his birth certificate. At least there is more. Stephen is actually Curry’s middle name. His full name is Wardell Stephen Curry II, named after his father, former NBA sniper Dell Curry, but in an effort to distinguish himself he has gone by “Stephen” throughout his career as a basketball.
He obviously managed to distinguish himself by using this name. Curry has won three NBA Championships and two MVPs using Stephen’s name, and he’s become so synonymous with it that he doesn’t even have the Curry surname anymore. When fans refer to him, they most often call him “Steph”.
But out of the blue Thursday, Athletic’s Marcus Thompson called him “Wardell” at a press conference, and Curry’s reaction was sheer confusion.
Thompson is a veteran of the Warriors beat. What prompted him to call Curry “Wardell” is unknown, but at the very least, he managed to grab the superstar’s attention. He then asked a question about Kelly Oubre Jr.’s returning dunks, but the takeaways from that press conference will forever be Curry’s reaction to hearing his own name. Although he was cast for a while, Curry eventually came back and answered the question. Yet in the memes-centric NBA world we live in, this screenshot of Curry is destined for Twitter immortality.
