Wayne County advises distance learning for all schools until January 15, 2021

FOX 2 – The Wayne County Public Health Division issued a public health advisory strongly recommending that Wayne County schools – public, non-public and boarding schools in our jurisdiction – temporarily switch to a distance learning model until January 15, 2021.

Wayne County recorded 1,170 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday. As of Sunday, Wayne County has reported 4,185 new cases. COVID-19 cases in the city of Detroit are being monitored and reported by the city, which has its own health department.

“We have reached a point in the pandemic that we were hoping the county would never see,” Wayne County Manager Warren C. Evans said. “This advisory is the strongest recommendation we can make at this time to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

In accordance with the public health code, the health worker can issue a disease prevention opinion. Specifically, Public Law 149 of 2020 requires school districts to develop learning programs to adapt to the pandemic and accommodate students to ensure their safety.

With the onset of colder temperatures and potential indoor gatherings with hospitals reaching their limits, the recommendation advises districts to fundamentally switch to a distance learning solution. This advisory is aimed at an age group who can spread COVID-19 without showing any signs or symptoms.

“Wayne County has many close-knit communities and we cherish our time with our families. But with Thanksgiving next week, we need to redouble our efforts to help protect the most vulnerable among us, ”Evans said. “These tips are imperative to protect the health and safety of our community.”

“We are working closely with our school districts to prevent further spread,” said Dr. Mouhanad Hammami, Wayne County chief health strategist. “Our intention is to protect schools, its staff and students from COVID-19.”
