Without the pesky Sports Illustrated MMQB writers – who reverted to their traditional poll format for a week in the middle of the season – each of the power rankings we follow would likely have had the Kansas City Chiefs in the same place as the week 9. Next week, the MMQB will revert to this season’s rotating format – in which one of its writers publishes their own power rating – so the top of their rating may then change. For the record: we like the MMQB survey format much better!

Patrick Mahomes is locked up and that makes the Chiefs something unbeatable. A Panthers’ attack on the ball gave Kansas City just 22 minutes of possession on Sunday, but it was still enough time for Mahomes to throw 372 yards and four touchdowns in a 33-31 win. Mahomes only needed 40 games to reach 101 touchdown passes, overtaking Dan Marino as the all-time triple-digit fastest. “You see the best of him right now,” Andy Reid said after the game. Reid launched a heavy offense against Carolina, and Mahomes relied on his two stars to lead the day – Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce finished with 272 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The reigning champions have been said goodbye as the best team in football.

Recalibrated wait: Repeat as Super Bowl Champions
Nothing that happened in the first nine games of the season has changed nothing in that regard. The Chiefs lead the NFL in points differential, a sign of their strength. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, with 25 touchdown passes and one interception, is playing as, if not better, than ever. The Chiefs have found ways to win even without getting great performances from Mahomes. From that perspective, the Chiefs look tough in the playoffs.

We have to remember that all NFL teams are capable. Well, most are. Of course, the Chiefs didn’t blow up the Panthers. But they won. There is no reason to question the quality of the Chiefs just because they played a close game against a competent team.

Despite all the talk that Patrick Mahomes isn’t as spectacular this season as he has been in years past, he has 25 touchdown passes and one interception and is perhaps the league’s favorite MVP. His presence will make the Chiefs the team to beat entering the playoffs, whether or not they are the AFC’s No.1 seed.

The AFC begins to separate from the NFC. I have the top four teams coming out of the American Football Conference now and the only two NFC teams that I think would be in the discussion right now would be the New Orleans Saints and the Green Bay Packers. The Seattle Seahawks are close, but their defense has question marks that could prevent them from competing for the NFC title in 2020.
Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Steelers are the only unbeaten in the NFL. The Kansas City Chiefs are probably still the best team in the league despite that loss and Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills are absolutely legitimate. Of course, don’t count on the Baltimore Ravens or the Tennessee Titans either. In all, the AFC has nine teams with a record of 5-3 or better against the NFC’s six.
