ISHPEMING – Ishpeming City Council has approved a license to drill a test well in the Al Quaal Recreation Area.
The license signed between the city of Ishpeming and the Negaunee-Ishpeming Water Authority allows the NIWA to seek another location for a suitable well in order to expand its network of underground wells. The goal is to provide more drinking water to Negaunee and Ishpeming.
“If this test were to prove the things they need – in order to generate the water they hope to generate – then that would come with an additional capital investment from NIWA, which would include new water pipes across the park and in the city street. then through Ishpeming and in the township to their factory (creating) a future source of water ”, Ishpeming City Manager Craig Cugini said at the meeting.
The deal was signed after a discussion of potential actions once testing was completed.
If the test results show that the well has sufficient water in terms of quality and ability to recharge, NIWA plans to consider this well as its permanent well and will seek the express written consent and approval of the city of Ishpeming.
NIWA would request a permanent 15-foot non-exclusive easement around the treated water main and well that would be erected in the Al Quaal Recreation Area, according to the agreement.
The agreement states that the NIWA will take responsibility for zoning approvals, maintenance and that neither party will change the plans without written consent.
