BALTIMORE (AP) – Maryland health officials said on Wednesday they had confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus in the state this year.
The Department of Health said an adult living in the Baltimore metro area has tested positive for the virus.
The virus is transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes by feeding on birds carrying the virus.
Up to 80% of those infected will show no signs of illness, but those with underlying health conditions could become seriously ill.
Although most people do not develop symptoms of this virus, some people who do develop an illness may have mild symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, rash, or swollen lymph nodes.
