MIAMI – The Yankees have shown everyone they are going by adding a few star hitters ahead of Friday’s trade deadline.
Already, they seem to be a handful on the street.
They are much more dangerous with lefties Anthony Rizzo and Joey Gallo in their roster and the presence of the newcomers resulted in an immediate win.
The day after his 10 seasons with the Cubs ended, Rizzo hit a home run, scored and scored two runs on Friday night in a 3-1 Yankees win over the Miami Marlins.

Beating second, playing on the right court and wearing Alex Rodriguez’s former No.13, Gallo was 0-for-4 with a walk, two strikeouts and a flyout to the warning lane that missed by bit of a circuit.
Hitting the clean up behind Aaron Judge and playing first base, Rizzo finished the night 2-for-4.
Derek Jeter’s first game of the series against the Marlins was scoreless until the fifth when Rizzo landed a 1-0 fastball from Miami rookie right-hander Zach Thompson deep into the second right-field bridge at LoanDepot Park for a home run. 449 feet and a 1-0 lead over the Yankees.
It was still a 1-0 game in the eighth when Rizzo scored a single and scored on Rougned Odor’s two-run hit.
Yankees starter Jameson Taillon (7-4) also had another good night, working 5 2/3 of the shutout to move up to 6-0 with a 2.10 ERA in his last seven starts.
The Marlins scored their lone run in the eighth against Yanks reliever Zack Britton, who allowed two singles and then a running double play for points.
NOTABLE
– Shortstop Gleyber Torres has started twice as a rookie in 2019, then not again until Friday night. He was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and one ejection in the seventh inning for throwing his bat and arguing with the ump plate after being called.
–The judge yelled at Marlins reliever (and former Yankees teammate) Richard Bleier after he was hit in the left ankle by a pitch while leading the eighth inning. He ended up scoring on Odeur.
– Torres beat the first goal because infielder DJ LeMahieu failed to start due to a tight triceps. LeMahieu was forced into the game following the expulsion.
– Third baseman Gio Urshela did not play due to hamstring strain and second baseman DJ LeMahieu missed the game with a tense triceps. Both are listed on a day-to-day basis and can play this weekend. “I am very hopeful, but we have to see how they react to the treatment,” said manager Aaron Boone.
– Playing on the outfield for the first time since 2019, Giancarlo Stanton started on the left and easily handled three flyballs before leaving the game in the sixth inning in a double switch. He was 0-for-3 with one strikeout, leaving him 10-for-59 (0.169) with a homerun, four RBIs and 25km in his last 16 games.
– The Yankees reached another deal before Friday to acquire left-handed starter Andrew Heaney from the Angels for two minor leaguers. He will fit into the rotation next week with Nestor Cortes likely slipping from the fifth starter in the long relief.
