FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) – For the first time in seven years, a resident of Fresno County has died of West Nile virus.

The Ministry of Health confirmed the death on Thursday morning.

At the present time, a woman from northeastern Fresno is recovering from the virus.

Just days ago, Laura Hardwick was released from a rehabilitation facility after spending two weeks at the Clovis Community Hospital.

The virus has not only touched his body, but also his brain.

The 64-year-old woman can not walk without a walker, eat without being fed or spell her name.

On July 4, Laura said she was bitten by several mosquitoes while she was at her daughter's home in Clovis.

The next day, she began to experience bouts of nausea, stomach pain and body aches.

"I went to the doctor, he said it was pneumonia," she says.

But after taking antibiotics, Laura continued to weaken.

It was at that time that she went to the Clovis Community Hospital.

Her husband says that they then learned that his wife had misdiagnosed his wife.

"He had all the results in his hand, but he always treated for pneumonia and they tested it for the West Nile and the doctor said that she had the West Nile," said Tom Hardwick .
