California opens vaccine eligibility for people 50 and older on Thursday. In addition, all people 16 and over will be eligible on April 15.
While state officials expect an increase in vaccine supply in April, there will likely not be enough immediately available appointments for those who wish to be vaccinated.
The state’s MyTurn website is the central hub for finding vaccine appointments, anywhere from the Oakland Coliseum mass vaccination site to Safeway pharmacies.
It now allows people 50 and over to book an appointment, but keep in mind that you may have to check the site for several days before you find availability. Appointments are added regularly but disappear quickly. We looked for appointments in San Francisco on Wednesday morning and couldn’t find any.
The state also encourages people with health insurance to register with their providers. Kaiser messaged members on Tuesday alerting them to the growing eligibility and limited supply.
“We have not yet received enough doses to vaccinate all eligible people,” Kaiser wrote in an email. “In Northern California, Kaiser Permanente has over 900,000 members aged 50 to 64 and over 2 million members aged 16 to 49, yet we receive 55,000 to 75,000 doses each week.”
Many pharmacies, including CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens, offer vaccines; you can go directly to their websites to search for appointments. You can find a full list of pharmacies offering vaccines on the California Department of Public Health website.
You can also contact your county public health department for information on vaccination at community clinics (below is information on vaccines for each county). All counties are complying with state guidelines and are launching efforts to start vaccinating people 50 and over, while Contra Costa has already opened up eligibility to 16 and over.
Finally, the VaccinateCA website, which is run by a group of volunteers who call hospitals and pharmacies to inquire about vaccine availability, is a great resource for finding appointments.
