MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Many students at Shelby County schools will be returning to classes this summer, just weeks after the current semester ends.

SCS Superintendent Joris Ray recently presented the 2021-2022 educational calendar to the school board.

Thousands of students will return to classrooms in July for four weeks of state-mandated learning, according to SCS.

The summer session is a state requirement, intended to mitigate learning losses associated with the pandemic.

These will be in person, according to SCS.

The end of summer vacation is still pending, but the director’s current plan is set for August 9.

The calendar will be voted on April 6 at the school board’s business meeting.

Two draft educational calendars were presented to the community for comment. There were two options, August 9 and August 16.

Of the 10,371 people who participated, 6,713 were in favor of the earlier start date.

The last day of class of the current school year is June 16. If you remember correctly, the start of classes was delayed until August 31 to give students time to get a laptop or tablet.

Many SCS students have learned virtually all year round as the coronavirus pandemic continues.
