The 32-team lineup for the UEFA Champions League group stage is now set for the 2021-22 season. But before action can begin in September, the 32 teams must be split into eight groups in Thursday’s draw in Turkey. Who is involved?
Twenty-six teams already qualified for the group stage thanks to their success from a season ago. Six more teams have reserved their places this week for the UCL play-offs. Here they are, including Champions League winners Chelsea and Europa League winners Villarreal, with three spots up for grabs on Wednesday.

What are the rules for the draw?
There will be four seeded pots, the first consisting of the six top-ranked league champions and UCL and EL winners. Pots 2 to 4 will be determined via the club coefficient rankings.
When forming groups, neither team can play another team from its own association in the group stage, which means that two teams from England, for example, cannot be in the same group. There are often other restrictions, such as the non-regrouping of teams from Ukraine and Russia due to long-standing political and military tensions over Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula.
