As the FDA reviews emergency use authorizations for COVID-19 vaccines, The New York Times on Thursday released a calculator showing Americans where they stand in the queue once a vaccine is approved.
The calculator, developed using the Surgo Foundation and Ariadne Labs Vaccination Tool, works by entering your age, location, job, and health history to find your place once a vaccine COVID-19 is approved.
For example, healthcare workers – regardless of age, location, or medical condition – are on the front lines for the vaccine. Towards the end of the line are younger, healthier Americans.
Meanwhile, most Alabamians are not expected to receive the vaccine until June, according to public health official Dr Scott Harris.
“There is not enough (of the vaccine) right now, and we hope people can be patient,” he said. “There is so much demand right now.”
Two vaccines – one made by Pfizer and BioNTech and another by Moderna – have applied for emergency use approvals from the FDA, which is speeding the vaccine’s time to market. The vaccine supported by Pfizer has an efficacy rate of 95% while that of Moderna has an efficacy rate of 94%.
