HOUSTON – More and more vape stores, online suppliers and skincare lines are touting the effects of cannabidiol (CBD) in their products.
The CBD became legal a few years ago under the Compassionate Care Act, which allowed its use in children with severe epilepsy.
Last September, the restrictions were again eased when the 2018 Farm Bill was adopted. Stores can now sell hemp derived CBD as long as it contains less than 0.3% THC. THC is the compound of marijuana associated with the rise.
Although the Farm Bill legalizes hemp, it is still a highly regulated crop in the United States, but there is a store in Fort Bend where people can buy beans. products made from this product.
From beverages, oils and edibles to lotions, soaps and shampoos, the American Shaman of Fort Bend sells CBD the way you want it.
"It's a bit lucky, I'm not going to lie, so it's a bit organic, like a plant," said store owner Carla Schaub. "However, they added a lot of different flavors, so I'm sure everyone can find their favorite flavor."
In reality, it does not just make people high, but it is touted as a treatment for a wide range of diseases, such as anxiety, pain, inflammation, acne and even cancer.
"I mean, me personally, it helped me with my depression and my migraines. We have people who take it for a wide variety of conditions, such as maybe help with epileptic seizures or help with autism, among other things, "Schaub said.
Schaub admits she would never have dreamed of being in this area, but she said business was booming.
"Since the adoption of the 2018 Farm Bill, it's a bit of an open market for hemp. Hemp farming and the sale and purchase of products, so basically, it's legal, "Schaub said.
However, lawmakers are still hesitant about the issue across the country. Just last week, the New York City Health Department cracked down and banned companies from adding CBD to food and drink until they determine whether they are safe or not.
Maine, Ohio and even Los Angeles are also interested in CBD.
Schaub said in Houston that almost everyone should try it.
"You will never feel good, you get all the calm without the pain," she says. "The only people who want to check with their superiors would be those on probation or those who might be active military. This could very well appear in a drug test.
The Food and Drug Administration is only supporting claims that the CBD could help with certain types of epilepsy. All other health claims are investigated.
