The last season of Netflix Jessica Jones in a few weeks, and the villain of the season is now revealed – Greg Salinger, A.K.A. the vigilante known as Foolkiller, played by actor Jeremy Bobb.
For those who have a thorough knowledge of the Marvel Bank, this name sounds very likely. In fact, three characters have used this code name in the Marvel Universe over the years (with alt-universe versions), some acting as an anti-hero and some crossing the straight line for to become naughty.
Ross G. Everbest
Gregory Salinger – the villain of Jessica Jones season 3 – is do not the original Foolkiller – at least not in comics. This dubious honor goes to Ross G. Everbest (created by Steve Gerber and Val Mayerik), an anti-Vietnamese activist who has become obsessed with an evangelist called "Reverend Mike" who has fueled divine delusions. When Everbest surprised Reverend Mike in the act of blasphemy, Everbest broke and killed Reverend Mike, preserving his body and preparing to kill several targets, including the mysterious Man-Thing.
Foolkiller brandished a "purifying ray" that disintegrated his victims with heated rays, but was killed when the tank in which he had preserved the Reverend Mike shattered, impaling him.
Things do not get any less strange from here.
Gregory Salinger
Gregory Salinger, also created by Gerber this time with Jim Mooney, is actually the second Foolkiller (and also the most recent in comics). His story is a bit longer and more complex. Salinger first learned the story of the Foolkiller in prison while he was sharing a room with one of his potential victims. Once released, he acquired a version of Everbest's "purifying pistol" and began macabre execution of criminals with indiscriminate violence.
Salinger was briefly convinced to join the Defenders. However, he quickly reacted by deciding that they were not tough enough in dealing with the crime, burning their headquarters, throwing him into a murderous naughty career, interspersed with an institutionalization of his crimes, driven by a little explored mental illness.
Salinger gave the role of Foolkiller to Kurt Gerhardt, another criminal he briefly counseled, before returning himself to the identity (more information about this later).
Kurt Gerhardt
Kurt Gerhardt was a struggling father, discouraged and underemployed, who had reached a deadly rage just in time to identify a bit too strongly with Gregory Salinger when Salinger was interviewed on a popular talk show. Like his predecessors, Gerhardt is a creation of Steve Gerber with the artist J.J. Bouleau.
Gerhardt and Salinger ended up logging in secret via an Internet bulletin board. Salinger then passed the torch and the Foolkiller's purifying pistol to Gerhardt, who launched a self-defense campaign to end his assault on the criminals.
But Gerhardt quickly broke this series, from celebrities to corrupt industrialists, before overheating and escaping to Arizona under a new identity. Gerhardt later returned as a prisoner on the raft and even shared a cell with Deadpool.
Merc For Money
Speaking of Deadpool, Merc With A Mouth is at least partly responsible for Gregory Salinger's re-taking of his role as Foolkiller in recent years. Deadpool called Salinger for his ragtag team "Mercs for Money" – and even influenced Salinger to get a degree in psychiatry as a therapist.
This reluctant concert directly led Salinger to play a unique role in the Marvel Universe – he was hired by S.H.I.E.L.D. rehabilitate violent criminals. However, even that included a huge reservation – Salinger's position in S.H.I.E.L.D. allowed him to kill those criminals who were not receptive to his therapy.
Although this is the latest version of Foolkiller to appear in the comics, the version in Jessica Jones does not seem to have a lot of links with the Salinger cartoon outside of his name. In the show, he seems to be a nagging singer Jessica – no ray of purification in sight.
Of course, Netflix and Marvel have already offered surprises, so maybe the flames will fly when June 14 marks the last season of Jessica Jones.
