Who is Rachel Maddow’s partner, Susan Mikula?

MSNBC specialist Rachel Maddow recently announced that her partner Susan Mikula tested positive for COVID-19 during a Thursday broadcast. Maddow has worked with the artist and photographer for over 20 years.

In a video shared on Thursday, Maddow explained how important her relationship with Mikula was to her and that she was fighting COVID.

“My relationship with Susan is the one thing at the end of the day that I would kill or die for without hesitation, and Susan has been sick with COVID for the past few weeks,” she said during the video. “At one point, we really thought there was a possibility it could kill her, and that’s why I left.

Maddow said Mikula is on the mend and is slowly recovering, but pleaded with viewers to take the virus seriously and make sure they take all the necessary precautions to ensure they don’t catch or do not spread the virus. Maddow said she would have given anything to swap places with Mikula, who is 15 years her senior, and face COVID in her place.

According to the biography on her website, Mikula’s work has been part of a number of exhibitions in cities across the country, such as New York, Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco, etc. The biography describes some of his techniques and processes as “hold[ing] with the camera open, to capture the light available over the time period it chooses. She also lists “carnivals, landscapes, borders, people, houses, demolition derbies, music and light itself” as subjects.

In an interview with the lawyer in 2011, she described her process as very measured. It can take months for her to think about the images before she really begins to photograph. “I’m very slow to take a photo,” she says. “When I finally start taking the pictures, I want to know what I’m looking for, which camera to use, what time and exactly when.”

Maddow and Mikula have been together since 1999. The couple divide their time between New York and western Massachusetts. Mikula grew up in New Jersey. The couple met when Mikula hired Maddow to do some yard work, and their first date was at the National Rifle Association-sponsored “Ladies Day on the Range” event. “When I met her she had her initials made of sheet metal on the door of her jeep,” Maddow said. The MSNBC host struggled with depression for much of his life. Maddow told CBS News in 2016 that Mikula often helps her when struggling with her mental health. “The hardest part is when I forgot it’s happening to me and so I don’t know what it is and she’ll say, ‘You’re depressed,’ and just be able to Identifying it and then knowing that it’s not going to be forever and it will pass and it will subside at some point, that helps, ”she told CBS.

Mikula had a little say in some of Maddow’s on-air fashion choices. She revealed to New York that she encouraged Maddow to put on makeup and was an influence on her outfit. “At one point, we understood that you could wear suits and they could be gray, or gray, or brown or black or gray,” she says. Maddow said her decision to wear gray suits was because no one was talking about what she was wearing, when she donned a gray suit.
