WASHINGTON, May 10 (Reuters) – New York liberal Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a junior Congressman, became Friday's youngest woman to preside over the US House of Representatives.
Sitting in the Speaker's House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as part of a routine rotation of House members, Ocasio-Cortez played her turn with the mallet and headed the room for about an hour. This duty is shared daily by members of the majority in the House, currently the Democrats.
In this case, Ocasio-Cortez did not have much to do. She presided over "special orders", which are usually brief speeches by members of the House at the end of the day of legislative work, often on issues of concern in their districts.

Ocasio-Cortez, 29, called the members as they stood up to speak, stumbling a couple of times on their original statements. "For what purpose does the gentleman from Ohio – uh, from Illinois, excuse me, seek to be recognized?" she said as a representative, Sean Casten, a first-year Democratic colleague, spoke.
"It was my first presidency. And it's exciting. It's definitely a sight.I wish we could, I'd like to be able to take pictures," she said. to the press after the session.
Ocasio-Cortez describes herself as a democratic socialist and is the most prominent member of a group of Democratic women elected to the House for the first time last November, thus strengthening the party's liberal wing.
She became a social media star, making headlines for dance and defending the Green New Deal, a package of proposals to combat climate change.
She is the youngest woman ever to be elected to Congress, representing the 14th district of New York in the Bronx and Queens. (Report by Susan Cornwell edited by Kevin Drawbaugh and Alistair Bell)
