Chicago reported its first case of measles – and the second confirmed in Cook County – on May 19, reports the Chicago Tribune. Confirmed cases occur less than two weeks after a study identified the county as being most vulnerable in the event of a measles outbreak.
Four things to know:
1. Infection marks the eighth case of measles in Illinois this year.
2. The confirmed case has occurred in an international traveler who visited several countries affected by measles outbreaks, according to Elena Ivanova, spokeswoman for the City of Chicago.
3. Researchers identified Cook County as being at greatest risk for the measles outbreak in all US counties based on four factors: population, non-medical vaccine exemption rates, volume of international air travel and the incidence of measles in the countries that travelers visit.
4. As of May 17, the CDC reported 880 cases of measles in 24 states.
