The British royal family will no longer be British – at least not in an upcoming major film.
A new film starring American actress Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana may not hire a British actor in the key role of a young Prince William because of Brexit, according to a casting notice.
Casting Director Amy Hubbard tweeted a call for a young actor to “presumably play Prince William at age 11” for “Spencer,” an upcoming docudrama about the late Lady Di.
“Must have a European passport (NOT British European due to new Brexit rules from January 1, 2021),” noted the appeal of the film shot in Germany next year when the British will no longer have rights to work at European level.
So far, 30-year-old Twilight star Stewart is the only actor confirmed for the upcoming film, along with other royals key to its history, including ex-husband Prince Charles and William’s brother Harry, not listed on IMDB.
While the casting call noted the problem only for William, his blame for the new European Union (EU) rules after Britain’s formal Brexit suggests the same limitations might apply as well. to other key figures.
Hubbard’s tweet sparked a heated debate over the laws, with many actors expressing shock and fears for future roles after Britain’s official departure from the EU.
“It is common in films that the passports of important characters must match that of financiers”, Hubbard later explained.

“Spencer” focuses on Diana for three days during the Christmas season in the early ’90s when she allegedly realized her marriage was over.
Stewart’s casting has already sparked a backlash among many royal fans – and the American actress recently admitted that learning Di’s chic English accent is “intimidating as hell.”
“People know this voice, and it’s so distinct and special,” she told InStyle for her November cover story.
“It’s one of the saddest stories that ever existed, and I don’t want to just play Diana – I want to know her implicitly,” she told the magazine. “I haven’t been so excited about playing a role, by the way, for so long.”
