Wichita, Kan. (KWCH) CBS Sports is part of national media reporting that Gregg Marshall, head coach of men’s basketball at Wichita State University and Shocker, is going their separate ways, likely this week.
Last month, Wichita state confirmed that an independent investigation was underway into allegations of Marshall’s abuse as part of his men’s basketball program. News of Marshall expected to leave Wichita state follows the reported conclusion of this investigation.
Marshall has denied the allegations of verbal and physical abuse against players and a former assistant coach at Wichita State, as well as at Winthrop, where he coached for nine seasons before starting at WSU.
“I simply state unequivocally that I have never physically hit a player or a colleague. Allegations to the contrary are false, ”Marshall said in a mid-October statement released after the first wave of allegations. On the court, Marshall led Winthrop, then Wichita State, to new heights, peaking with a 2013 NCAA Tournament Final Four with the Shockers. Along with WSU, Marshall has also developed NBA talent, including NBA champion Fred VanVleet with the Toronto Raptors and Landry Shamet who is a key player for the Los Angeles Clippers.
The success of the Marshall-led men’s basketball team launched Shocker Athletics into the more competitive American Athletics Conference. Especially in basketball, the conference decision was seen as a significant step up from the Missouri Valley Conference to which the state of Wichita was a member for several decades until 2017.
In 14 seasons at Wichita State, Marshall led the Shockers to seven NCAA tournament appearances and an overall record of 331-121. His overall record as a NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball coach is 525-204.
On Monday evening, Eyewitness News contacted several people, including the sports administration of Wichita State University and the Marshall camp, but received no response. Look for updates with official reports as this story unfolds.
