Business travel as we know it is a thing of the past. From Pfizer Inc., Michelin and LG Electronics Inc. to HSBC Holdings Plc, Hershey Co., Invesco Ltd. and Deutsche Bank AG, companies around the world are reporting that innovative new communication tools are marking the history of many pre-pandemic journeys.

To take Akzo Nobel NV, the largest paint manufacturer in Europe, for example. At his head office in Amsterdam, CEO Thierry Vanlancker has spent the last year watching his manufacturing manager, David Prinselaar, flap his arms, gesticulate madly and seemingly talk to each other while “visiting” 124 factories while leading staff with high definition augmented reality headgear in factories. A task that previously involved flying around the globe is now done in a fraction of the time – and without jet lag. For Vanlancker, there is no turning back.
